How
do we design a Birthday Cake?
Helpful things to consider when designing
your cake; the individual for whom it is intended, their hobbies and
traits for example, the theme of the occasion and the statement you
are trying to create. It can also be useful to show us any references
that may be appropriate, such as invitations or photographs.
How do we design a Wedding Cake?
A couture cake is a unique cake created especially for you, one that reflects the style of your wedding. Thus it is advisable to leave the cake until the attire and décor of your wedding have been determined. When you have decided on the style and ambience of your wedding, bring us a photograph of your dress, a swatch of any other fabrics you intend to use, and a few photographs of the site where the wedding reception will take place. It is very important that your cake suits the venue you have chosen. A small delicate cake would be dwarfed in a large room and vice a versa. Let us know whether it will be a black-tie or casual affair and whether it will be day-time or evening, and so on.

The
first step is took look through our portfolio and choose a basic style
or shape of cake, whether it be round, stacked, square or perhaps a
combination, such as square base with round. When it comes to personalizing
your cake the possibilities are almost endless. From taking the pattern
of a table cloth or invitation and using the same pattern in icing all
over the cake, to focusing on a particular flower used in the bouquet
and applying it in appliqué or sugar flowers to the cake. Colour too
is all important - think about how many shades of green there are! So
if you cannot provide fabric swatches we will provide you with a PMS
colour chart to choose the colours you want.
What makes Planet Cake so special?
We employ the most talented cake artists in the country and with their huge range of experience can recreate almost anything in cake, from the Guggenheim Museum for an architect's wedding to a new watch for Bulgari. All of our staff possess a minimum of 10 years experience, have a trade certificate as well as an art qualification and keep abreast of current fashion trends in order to continually develop new cake designs.
What if I have a budget?
People are often reluctant to reveal their budget for fear that they will be exploited or miss out on a cake that could be fabulous if only we would reduce the cost. Nothing could be further from the truth, in not revealing your budget we will immediately design a cake regardless of any financial constraints thus wasting everyone's time, including yours! State your budget and we will attempt to design something incorporating some of the elements of more expensive cakes that you found desirable, we are more than happy to do this. If you have decided to set a fairly conservative budget for your wedding cake, rather than trying to get a cheap version of an expensive cake, explore the option of using a reputable decorator to do the icing and covering it in fresh flowers supplied by your florist (then the flowers match perfectly to your bouquet).

How much will I expect to pay for a Planet Cake couture cake?
Planet Cake cakes vary considerably in price, however our couture cake range starts from AU$500-$2000.
What factors will influence the cost of my cake?
As a general rule the cost of a cake depends on how much artistic labor is involved. Therefore cakes that are a difficult or unusual shape or require a lot of fine lace piping or sugar flowers will be more expensive.
Are there any hidden charges?
Delivery is certainly an additional expense and will need to be discussed, particularly for cakes traveling outside of the metropolitan area or on Sundays.

Coffee versus dessert portions, how do I know?
If you are having a three-course meal or cocktail function your guests will generally require only a small taste or coffee portion. Each piece is about the size of a petit four. If you would like to offer a more substantial portion or serve it as course on it's own, we would recommend considering a dessert- sized portion.
Note: A dessert portion is roughly 2.5 x 5 x 9 cm high, while a coffee portion is half the size of a dessert portion.
What if I want to keep the top tier?
Another important element to consider is whether you intend to keep part of your wedding cake (as per tradition for your first anniversary). If you do, immediately advise us, as this tier, usually the top one will have to be made in fruit cake (for its preserving qualities) and some modern cake designs do not lend themselves to having such a weighty top tier. We will advise you as to how best to keep your cake, however as a general rule if you wrap your cake firmly in cling film, store it in an airtight container and pop it in the freezer it will be fine for 12 months. A word of caution: never keep the cake in a frost-free freezer, because the constant defrosting will draw the moisture out of the cake. If you are moving within the year, leave the cake with in a family member or friend's freezer after the wedding to avoid moving the cake before your anniversary. Sugar flowers and cake toppers need to be removed and kept away from sunlight and moisture so it is best to store them in an airtight container in a dark cupboard where they will be quite happy.

When should I book my cake?
For wedding cakes we prefer 4-6 weeks notice. For corporate, birthday or other occasions we prefer 2-4 weeks notice during early Australian summer (October-December). At other times 1-2 weeks notice is adequate. Often we can accommodate late requests, and in exceptional circumstances same day delivery is possible depending on production levels (surcharges apply).
Do you sell Couture Cupcakes?
Cupcakes are a fashionable alternative to a traditional birthday or wedding cake, they make perfect sense at events where finger food is being served. Cupcakes vary in price depending on the decoration, at Planet Cake they start at $6 and depending on how many people you are serving this could be very economical, however bare in mind that you will need to display them and they will need to be assembled on the day. This is the part most people forget when they are dreaming about their cupcake castle and also where cupcakes can be more expensive than an ordinary cake. if you have not got a stand or don't wish to hire one we can make iced boards especially for your design that can be easily put together to create your castle and we recommend finding a friend for the assembly rather than paying for a stylist if you want to avoid that cost. NB: cupcakes + display + assembly + GST = total.
